Dive Into Authentic Research This Summer

No lab? No worries. You don’t always need to be associated with a tangible lab to conduct research. In fact, many of the engineering Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) projects do not have lab access. Competing and ISEF and conducting research boils down to solving a real-world problem. Which problems are the best to research? 

Choosing a Research Topic 

The best topics align with your interests and the more niche, the better. Scanning across the ISEF finalist topics, you’ll notice that all are very specific topics within their respective categories. For most students interested in research, the process in finding a topic begins with their favorite school subject or a wondering they’ve had. To select a more impactful topic, consider listing out noticings from your community and identifying any gaps or challenges you’d like to explore. 

The Actual Research Process 

Research begins with reading through established research. Check Google Scholar, PubMed, arXIV, any any research database your school offers. From there, read through all the topics you’re interested in. Take note of what people are wondering about your tohttps://scholar.google.com/pic, what established methods there are, and where the challenges arise. 

Once you’ve narrowed your research topic, make your question or project and map out your methodology. The best part is, since you’ve done the reading, you can take methodology inspiration from already established journals and take note of what failed and what you’d like to improve on. Research is iterative, so you’ll likely go through rounds of trial and error before flushing out your research in full.
