Often, students and parents believe there is a recipe for a competitive advantage to elite colleges. Sure, having the perfect GPA and SAT while maximizing AP and IB courses may show that students are challenging themselves academically, but what’s more important is how students weave their unique story together. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology states “that while grades and scores are important in understanding your academic preparedness for MIT, it’s really the match between applicant and the Institute that drives our selection process.” So, what exactly is this winning edge that elite colleges like MIT are looking for?
What Elite Colleges Look For
According to Columbia University Admissions, they look for “the intellect, curiosity and dynamism that are the hallmarks of the Columbia student body, and seeking the resilience and diversity of voice and background ensured by our generous need-based financial aid program.” Most elite colleges have a similar statement, often prioritizing intellectual vitality, high achievement, and real-world impact. But with thousands of students, all with similar statistics and extracurriculars, how do admissions officers distinguish between each applicant? Better yet, how do top students stand out?
The Admissions Reality
Many families believe that earning a certain award or completing a particular summer program is enough to get their students admitted. However, there isn’t a particular activity that will guarantee admissions success. The reality is that top applicants are focusing on the “why.” Why students do certain activities, why students take certain classes, and why students care for the things they do. Yale University states “The great majority of students who are admitted stand out from the rest because a lot of little things, when added up, tip the scale in their favor.” Essentially, it’s everything that a student does that can appeal to the admissions officers, but it’s how the student writes about their experiences that can turn the odds to their favor.
Where Top Applicants Rise
Top applicants are able to reflect on their experiences and articulate their why. They’re able to ask themselves why they chose their pathways, explain what drives their curiosities, and elaborate on how their choices and activities throughout the years connect. It’s a metacognitive and reflective process that is unique to every student and it’s a process that we at SK Education Consulting can help you with.
